Nokia Lumia 900 Windows Phone - Larger and Better than Lumia 800

What's the difference between the Nokia Lumia 900 and Lumia 800 models?nokia Lumia 900 windows phone

new Nokia Lumia 900 is the latest addition to Nokia Windows Phone portfolio and although replicates many of the features found in the original Lumia 800 model it adds in some extra technology and features.

Joined recently by the Nokia Lumia 610 as an entry level handset to the range, the Lumia 900 is the new 'king of the show' which offers everything the previous Lumia 800 model does but with a larger touch screen display.

The new 4.3 inch AMOLED screen with ClearBlack technology makes internet browsing, watching back video and showing off your high quality pictures a much more enjoyable experience, the extra size of the screen is also great for gamers and has a pixel resolution of 480 x 800.

New features added to the Nokia Lumia 900 include a 1 mega pixel front facing camera for those that like to make video calls and access to the iCloud storage service for extra memory over and above the internal 16GB on offer.

Nokia Lumia 900 has exactly the same camera as the Lumia 800 at 8 mega pixels using Carl Zeiss optics and recording 720p HD video clips, the phone is also run by the same processor at 1.4GHz with 512MB of RAM.

Although not a major upgrade in terms of features, the Lumia 900's bigger screen will appeal to many smart phone users as its the same size offered by top-selling handsets like the Samsung Galaxy S2, Sony Xperia S and HTC One S.

Currently released in both a black and a white colour scheme the Nokia Lumia 900 is also set to be launched in a cyan blue housing very soon.

How to Turn Nokia Lumia 900 Into a Wi-Fi Hotspot

The Nokia Lumia 900 Windows Phone has a personal hotspot feature that makes it possible for your to turn your device into a wireless hotspot and then share the Internet connection with up to five devices. However, in order to use the hotspot feature, you must have a data package with your cellular data provider that supports Internet sharing. The more devices your share your Internet with, the slower the Internet will be across all of the devices.

Follow This Step to Turn Nokia Lumia 900 into a Wi-Fi Hotspot :
  1. Tap the right-pointing arrow with a circle around it in the upper-right corner of your Nokia Lumia 900 home screen. A menu appears on your phone's screen that includes options including Office, Outlook, Phone and Photo Studio.
  2. Tap "Settings." The Settings option features a white gear inside of a blue box. The Settings screen appears on your phone.
  3. Scroll down and then select "Internet Sharing." The Settings Internet Sharing screen appears on your Nokia Lumia 900 smart phone.
  4. Tap the box to the right of the Sharing option on the screen until the bar inside of the box moves to the right side of the box and the inner part of the box turns blue and the word "ON" appears beneath Sharing. A note appears on the lower half of the Nokia Lumia 900 windows phone screen that Internet Sharing is enabled and that the feature will automatically turn itself off if no devices are connected to the smart phone's hotspot after a few minutes. Additionally, the name of your smart phone's hotspot, password required for access and the number of people connected to the hotspot appears on the lower half of the Settings Internet Sharing screen. If you don't want to change the name of the hotspot as it will be displayed when searching for Wi-Fi networks on other devices or the password required to access the wireless hotspot, you can connect to the wireless network on another device using the information provided. Alternatively, if you want to change the name of your hotspot or the password required to access it, tap "Setup" at the bottom of the Settings Internet Sharing screen.
  5. Tap the name of your hotspot and then enter the new name for your hotspot as it will appear on other devices.
  6. Tap the existing password and then enter a new password that will be required to access the wireless hotspot.
  7. Save your changes. You can connect up to five devices to the hotspot, and you can monitor how many devices are connected to the hotspot at the Settings Internet Sharing screen.

Will Verizon throw its weight behind Windows Phone?

Nokia has been building some buzz in the U.S. for its Windows Phone Lumia 900 for AT&T. Could Verizon be the next taker?

Verizon may be ready to cast its lot with Microsoft and its Windows Phone platform.Verizon Chief Financial Officer Fran Shammo, speaking on a conference call today, said he was "fully supportive" of Microsoft and talked about the need for a third mobile ecosystem in the industry.

That Verizon shifted from its previously lukewarm stance on Windows Phone to today's comment underscores the increasing need for wireless carriers to wean themselves off of their dependence on Android and iOS, which are the two dominant smartphone platforms. Apple, in particular, has been able to extract hefty subsidy payments from the carriers, forcing them to look elsewhere for alternative hit devices.

Verizon's marketing heft and large base of basic phone customers could be a boon to Microsoft and Nokia, which have been at the forefront of the recent Windows Phone push. While both are putting their resources behind the Lumia 900 launch at AT&T, having a presence at the two largest carriers in the U.S. would greatly enhance its chance of success.

"It hints that there's a Nokia device that could appear on the Verizon network in the near future," said Todd Rosenbluth, an equity analyst at Standard & Poor's.

Verizon believes that it can drive the adoption of Windows Phone devices just as it drove sales of Android with its Droid franchise.

Verizon actually wasn't with Android at the beginning. T-Mobile USA was the first carrier to offer an Android phone -- the G1 from HTC. But Verizon struck a deeper partnership with Google, and its marketing clout helped turn the original Motorola Droid into a smash hit. The Droid's early success and the resulting push of Verizon's Droid franchise pushed Android into the mainstream.

Even to this day, people still believe Droid is synonymous with all Android phones, despite it being a Verizon-only brand. It wasn't until AT&T was on the cusp of losing its iPhone exclusivity that it began embracing Android.

Just as Verizon's desire to create a hit smartphone forced a partnership with Google, the dominance of Apple and Google may again convince the carrier to find a new ally in Microsoft.

The comments, however, come amid mixed results for Nokia and Windows Phone. In the U.S., Nokia Lumia 900 appears to be holding up strong despite glitches with some of the phones

Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket vs. Nokia Lumia 900 : Specs Compared

Despite a number of PR gaffs and thus far stagnant sales, Microsoft looks to finally make a dent in the mobile market with the Nokia Lumia 900—easily the most anticipated Windows Phone release to date.

The striking design, 4G LTE compatibility, and top-of-the-line specs certainly make this the most compelling Windows Phone yet, but will it be enough to smoke our top Android pick for AT&T, the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket? Read on for a side-by-side spec comparison.

This will be Nokia's third Lumia device, but only the second to reach American shores, joining the Lumia 710 for T-Mobile. The Lumia 900 is more of a high-end device and looks to go up against top Android smartphones, as well as the uber-popular Apple iPhone 4S. However, this is not an iPhone comparison. For a closer look at how the Lumia 900 stacks up against Cupertino's flagship phone, be sure to check out our separate side-by-side comparison.

It's hard to make a direct hardware comparison with Android smartphones as nearly all of the top models feature dual-core processors—including the Skyrocket, with its dual-core, 1.5-GHz Qualcomm chip. The Lumia 900 sports a single-core, 1.4-GHz Qualcomm APQ8055, but cores don't tell the whole story. In our browser benchmark, the Lumia 900 was able to keep pace with top Android phones, in spite of its core deficiency.

The Nokia Lumia 900 stands out from the selection of carbon copy Android handsets, with its combination of curved and flat edges and striking white and cyan blue color choices. Its screen is slightly smaller than the Skyrocket's, at 4.3 inches as opposed to 4.5 inches, but it manages to pack the same 800-by-480 pixel resolution. Both smartphones feature 8-megapixel cameras, but only the Skyrocket can capture full 1080p HD video—the Lumia 900 tops out at 720p.
The problem is not its lack of apps, it has 65,000, but rather its lack of popular apps on platforms like Android and iOS. All you Zynga fiends will be disappointed by the lack of "with Friends" titles, and popular apps like Cut the Rope, Draw Something, Pandora, and Temple Run. WP 7.5 on the Lumia 900 does come with its advantages, though, as users will have access to productivity apps like Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. If staying connected with social networks is a big concern, the Facebook and Twitter integration in Windows Phone is simpler and more intuitive than its Android counterparts.

The Lumia 900 is priced more aggressively than most flagship phones, at only $49 with a two-year contract—though it can be found for even less at sites like Amazon. The Skyrocket, like most high-end smartphones, costs more than double, at $199 with a two-year agreement. Keep in mind, though, if you're already heavily invested in the Android ecosystem, that price gulf is less of a factor.

This is by no means a comprehensive breakdown, but it should give you a basic idea of some key differences between the Lumia 900 and the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket—our pick for top Android smartphone on AT&T. The big question is: Are consumers ready to make the switch to Windows Phone? Microsoft and Nokia are banking on the Lumia 900 to open the door to consumers' hearts. Are you willing to take the leap? Think there are better Android or Windows Phone options on AT&T? As always, feel free to voice your opinions in the comment section below.

Nokia Lumia 900 Preorder Now Available on Amazon

Nokia Lumia 900 Windows Phone
Nokia Lumia 900 officially launches on AT&T and savvy shoppers can pick themselves up a brand-new Windows Phone for the simple price of one penny.

No, that's not a typo. AT&T might have the Lumia 900 listed for a cool $99.99 as of this article's writing, but a quick trip over to Amazon reveals that you can purchase the same device for a tiny piece of copper (technically, copper-plated Zinc, but who's counting?)

Is that strange? The amount certainly isn't: Amazon (and others) routinely discount smartphones to entice new users to sign up for full-fledged service contracts. The same holds true for the Lumia 900: It might cost a penny, but that's only if one commits to a full two-year service plan with AT&T. That's a bare minimum of $39.99 monthly for AT&T's basic 450-minute plan and an additional $20 for AT&T's cheapest, 300-megabyte data plan.

Hey, at least you'll be grabbing that data pretty quickly, given that the Lumia 900 taps into AT&T's 4G-LTE network (not to be confused with its "4G" network.) But don't expect to just be able to grab the Lumia 900 and quit out after a short period of time: AT&T's early termination fee applies, and it's a hefty $325 minus $10 for every month of service you complete.

What is a little strange, however, is the fact that the Lumia 900 isn't even out yet and it's already getting discounted to virtually nothing. When's the last time that happened to any smartphone you purchased? One certainly doesn't get the latest Apple iPhones for free with a new contract, nor any top-shelf Android device.

Given that the Lumia 900 has routinely been described as Nokia's flagship device for AT&T — "our hero phone," said AT&T's Jeff Bradley in an interview with CNET — it's a little odd to see it so quickly discounted without any accompanying sale, promotion, or explanation.

That said, AT&T does win the day for no-commitment Lumia 900 smartphones. If you want your device sans contract, it'll cost you only $449.99 at AT&T's store versus $499.99 at Amazon's. In the world of online shopping, it's certainly worth checking every site. See More Nokia Lumia 900 Windows Phone Details Here !

Will You Buy Nokia Lumia 900 Windows Phone?

AT&T take pre-orders for Nokia's flagship LTE handset on March 30, 2012; and the sales will start April 8. Will you buy the Lumia 900 Windows Phone?

March 30 is finally here. Can you believe it took so long to arrive? Today, AT&T is taking pre-orders for the tasty Nokia Lumia 900. Yes, tasty. What? You think only Google's Ice Cream Sandwich is sweet? Not so. Windows Phone 7.5 "Mango" Commercial Release 2 is, too. It's yours on a swanky Nokia smartphone pimped with Carl Zeiss lens for the 8-megapixel camera and pumped with speedy LTE for data. For 99 bucks, AT&T practically gives away Nokia Lumia 900.

Many of you think so, too. Earlier in the week I asked: "Will you buy Nokia Lumia 900 Windows Phone for $99?" The overwhelming majority of respondents will -- nearly three out of four. The Finnish phone maker bet the company on Microsoft's mobile OS and brings this handset to a large, overlooked market. Nokia's US presence is mighty invisible outside T-Mobile. If Nokia Lumia 900 and its companions fail, so may Nokia.

Before giving the poll results, I owe you an apology. Typically, the greatest number of respondents come during the initial burst of reads. I made a last-minute change to the poll's appearance right before posting, then ran off to help my 90 year-old father-in-law with something. When I returned and checked the story, the poll wasn't there. After editing and re-saving, the poll appeared but missed the early burst of pageviews. Still, there are 1,296 responses as I write, which is more than I expected considering.

What You Say?

Many reader comments show tremendous enthusiasm for Nokia's flagship Windows Phone, but lots of debate about the operating system's future and also the handset maker's.

Commenter weetigo "preordered the Lumia 900". Avatar Roku is "leaving Sprint, getting the blue cyan version of the Nokia Lumia 900".

Reader Joe (it's not me!): "Better industrial design than Apple, much more durable and also a better UI/UX; $99 means it will be free or near free on AmazonWireless soon. Fing awesome!"

Several of you see AT&T distribution as reason not to buy Lumia 900. "I think more people would have bought if AT&T were not involved", Matt Reid comments. "If the Nokia 900 can be sold for so little maybe they should have hit the prepaid market hard. I'd run to get this phone at anyone other than AT&T". Still, "I will be dumping my Epic 4G for the Lumia 900". Anthony Clark: "I would, but not on AT&T. Bring it over to Verizon and we can talk".

Gary Prusso won't buy on April 8. "I'm going for white, which will be offered on April 22nd".

"Considering the crap that phone manufacturers and service providers put on Android, and the crap that Apple puts their user through, I'll consider giving WP7 a fair shake", Daniel Ahn writes.
